New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger Day!

Farmers Against Hunger celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and let me tell you - we plan to party. And by party, I mean....get our glean on.

No party is great, without great friends. Our party "hosts", the farmers, are the life of the party, welcoming us to their farms to pick up their surplus crops and allowing our party guests, our volunteer "Glean Teams", to come out to harvest from the fields. As new friends and long-time supporters come together to to glean thousands of pounds of surplus crops, a community of people joined by common ground is brought together to help reduce waste while providing fruits and vegetables to neighbors in need.

Farmers Against Hunger is turning up the volume on gleaning awareness with the goal of changing the way the public views, understands and supports gleaning. We want others to know what gleaning means. We want others to know what gleaning accomplishes. And, most importantly, we want others to know how they can support gleaning.

We are thrilled to celebrate the first New Jersey Gleaning Week and Farmers Against Hunger Day which were designated by the New Jersey State Legislature in January 2016. These events will help: 1) Define and promote gleaning to the public 2) Educate about food waste, food insecurity and gleaning as a solution. 3) Share volunteer and support opportunities 4) Discuss statewide solutions for increasing gleaning.

We still cannot believe that "Gleaning" has its own statewide week and Farmers Against Hunger has its own statewide day of recognition. This may seem like small potatoes to some, but for Farmers Against Hunger and other gleaning organizations, this is a major step forward in publicizing our mission. We would like to thank Assemblymen Bob Andrzejczak, Timothy Eustace, Adam Taliaferro, and Gilbert "Whip" Wilson for sponsoring the bills to support this legislation. We appreciate those assemblymen who came to our partner farms to see the gleaning process and speak on our behalf to move these bills forward in just one year.

This "gleaning party" is just getting started. We can celebrate the 1.4 million pounds of food recovered annually by Farmers Against Hunger, but also need to look forward to solutions which will enable us to recover the millions more which continue to be left behind. With 1 in 6 New Jersey residents facing food insecurity and 40% of all food produced in the United States going uneaten, we know that gleaning plays a critical role.

We hope you all will join us in our celebration during New Jersey Gleaning Week, Farmers Against Hunger Day, and year-round in our mission to provide surplus fresh fruits and vegetables to those in need. You are all invited to this party!

So, how will we celebrate? Please visit our Gleaning Week Events page for weekly events and join us on social media. (Instagram/Facebook: @ NJ Farmers Against Hunger), (Twitter: @ NJ_FAH) We will be posting contests and social media challenges too.

We encourage you to post your support of Gleaning and Farmers Against Hunger on social media using #NJGlean or #njfarmersagainsthunger.
