A school garden is a tremendous educational tool. It provides hands-on
learning for all subject areas and gives many students their first
look at where their food really comes from. The Learning Through
Gardening program is a K-5 program which increases student understanding
of many science, social studies, mathematics and literature concepts
using the garden for hands-on approaches and problem solving techniques.
Schools awarded the grant will receive:
- $1,500 to begin a school wide garden
- Up to $1,000 the second year and up to $500 the third, fourth and fifth years
- books on starting and maintaining a garden or small garden activities
- a collection of additional agriculturally themed lessons and activities
- guidance from experts in the agricultural industry
- on demand educational support from a former classroom teacher
