Vertically Integrated, Family Operated, & Community Focused
NJAS Executive Director, Newell Thompson, and FAH Program Director, Stacey Kennedy, were given a tour of the packaging, logistics, and distribution facility followed by a farm tour led by Executive Vice President and fourth-generation family member, Chelsea Consalo, With both local farm production and a global citrus import business, Consalo's commitment to quality, cleanliness, safety, and efficiency was evident all along our tour.
Their extensive range of produce, including blueberries, spinach, leeks, herbs, kale, and more, cultivated right in Vineland and Hammonton and distributed across the mid-Atlantic region, provides fresh, health, nutritious foods to millions of consumers each week through their retail partners including Safeway, ShopRite, Acme, Harris Teeter, and many others.
As we drove through the blueberry fields, active beehive colonies spurred the pollination process on this beautiful day. Not only were the bees active, but workers were busy harvesting spinach right from the fields. A heartfelt thank you to Chelsea and her family for generously sharing their time and insights and allowing us to explore their farms and operations in Vineland and Hammonton - witnessing firsthand the fruits of their labor.
And their families impact goes beyond the family farm and into communities they serve. A recent story in The Packer showcases The 'Mandarins Making a Difference' campaign in partnership with Harris Teeter in North Carolina. And, closer to home, Skip Consalo was recognized by being honored with the 2023 Spirit of Achievement Award by the Italian Cultural Foundation of South Jersey for their commitment to serving those in need through the Vineland Soup Kitchen. An excerpt from The Produce News reports:
"...giving back to the community has long been a big part of the culture — and the success — at Consalo Family Farms. 'Some of the goals Skip has inspired include giving back in areas where food and farming impact society,' said Chelsea Consalo, one of Consalo’s three children, the fourth generation to be involved in the business. 'Over the years, his philanthropic endeavors have ranged from supporting schools, local sports teams, scholarships and beyond.""
Finally, the investment Consalo Family Farms is making in New Jersey is significant. We explored a brand new building nearing completion for blueberry packing, additional acres of organic blueberries being planted, and a state of the art packing facility just completed...All supporting our agricultural economy in the Garden State.
The New Jersey Agricultural Society is honored to have Consalo Family Farms as a new member and we are looking forward to watching you GROW in the years ahead.
